Stairlift and home lift manufacturers in Ontario

The businesses in our Lifts & Access directory install equipment made by a small number of manufacturers. These five are the names you'll see most on Ontario quotes — here's who they are and what each one makes, so a quote makes sense when it arrives.

Start with the installer, not the brand

A stairlift is only as good as the company that measures, fits and services it. Most Ontario dealers carry two or three of these brands, and the right choice usually comes down to your staircase and who can get a technician to your door when something stops. There are 108 lift and access specialists in the directory — get two quotes.

Acorn Stairlifts

Founded in West Yorkshire, England, in 1992

Acorn builds stairlifts and nothing else, and sells them direct rather than through independent dealers. It makes both straight and curved models, and puts its emphasis on quick installation, which matters when someone is coming home from hospital. Ask whether the Ontario installer is employed by Acorn or subcontracted, and who does the service calls.

Bruno Independent Living Aids

Family-owned, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, since 1984

Bruno makes stairlifts in the United States and sells them through authorized dealers rather than direct. Beyond the stairs, it is one of the main makers of vehicle mobility equipment — turning seats that swing out of a car or van, and lifts that load a wheelchair or scooter into it.

Savaria

Canadian, headquartered in Laval, Quebec, since 1979

Savaria is the largest Canadian name in home accessibility, and the one you are most likely to see on an Ontario elevator quote. Its range runs from stairlifts to full residential elevators, including the vertical and inclined platform lifts that solve a front step or a split-level house without a ramp. It bought Handicare in 2021, so the two brands now share a parent company but are still sold separately.

Handicare

Part of Savaria since 2021; stairlifts built in the Netherlands

Handicare is best known for curved stairlifts, where each rail is made to measure for one staircase — the expensive, slower-to-arrive end of the market, and the one where fit matters most. It also makes straight stairlifts and patient-handling equipment such as ceiling and floor lifts. In Ontario it is sold and serviced through local mobility dealers.

Stannah

Family-owned, England, since 1867; stairlifts since 1975

Stannah is one of the oldest lift companies in the world and among the largest stairlift makers, still run by the same family. It makes straight, curved and outdoor stairlifts, with seat and footrest options aimed at people who find sitting down or turning at the top of the stairs difficult.

Check the funding before you sign

The Assistive Devices Program does not pay for stairlifts or platform lifts. HVMP can, and most programs won't reimburse work that was bought before you applied. The order to apply in is worth ten minutes before any deposit.
